Becoming a mom opens a whole new world to those of us who "used to be" various different things. For one, modesty goes right out the window once you've giving birth and have had half the hospital staff standing around to witness the event. After that you figure what the hell. Also various topics that were not considered dinner conversation are now totally acceptable. Discussing my son's bowel activity while enjoying spaghetti and meatballs is quite common nowadays. Hell, I might even be eating, stop to change an overloaded diaper and come back to the table without skipping a beat.
Only recently have I realized how sometimes I answer people's questions. A guy I work with today complimented me on how much weight I have lost and that I was looking great. When asked what I was doing, I mindlessly went into how I haven't had time to exercise much but how since I am still breast feeding and pumping at work seems to be melting the pounds away. Was this really something he wanted to hear. I have no clue. Do I care? Not really. Hey, he asked, I was only being honest.
I used to have manners as well. In the past, if someone commented on how I looked I would simply say thank you and then continue to be self conscience for the remainder of time I thought people we staring at me. Was I dressed inappropriately? Were my pants too tight? Was my ass too big? Exposing my goodies was not high up on my list. Not so much anymore. Instead of saying thank you now, I say, "I know. It's amazing what breast feeding can do for the body, eh?" Or the ever popular comment on how cute my kid is to which I respond, "I know. He really is the cutest thing ever. Mommy did a good job."
Apparently, motherhood comes with the ability to speak in third person to anyone who will listen. This is funny to me since that was something that would annoy me in the past. Now I am probably El Presidente of the "I talk about myself in the third person" club. Aside from this, I also carry 7 months worth of pictures around and give a running commentary and every single one.
I love it! This new found loss of inhibitions is great. Who needs alcohol?

Ok, so I have a problem...
Although I am a 29 year old wife and mom, I found one whole week to devote to reading the entire Twilight saga. These are four long novels that took me, that's right, one week to read. I found myself reading in the bathroom, in the car, while the kid was napping or playing and worst of all while I was pumping. I knew I had a problem when I was pumping and reading these books at the same time. According to my brother these books were for teenage girls in the band, a profile that I no longer fit into. But for some strange reason I was totally obsessed with reading at every spare moment. I had to know what happened. It was probably a good thing that I didn't know about the books until all the movie hype came out, because I could not have waited in between for Stephenie Meyer to complete each novel.
I convinced my hubby to take me to the movie, which was really good. Some avid "Twilighters" thought the movie did not live up to the book. You have to remember that it is hard to adapt a 500 page novel into a 150 page movie script. All in all I loved it. Getting into the whole thing a little late, I had to google articles about the movie and youtube all the interviews with cast members. I was often referred to as a dork by doing this "research" which I gladly wear the title with pride.
Anywho, after ordering myself an "All I want for Christmas is Edward Cullen" ornament and purchasing several collector series magazines, I can officially say this is the first time I have behaved this way since the New Kids on the Block. And since I went to the NKOTB reunion concert, why not keep the dorkiness aflowin'. The hubby has given in and bought me the Twilight soundtrack for Christmas, which I listen to everyday on my way to work. My friend Erin and I have traded music, articles and countless emails like giddy school girls on this very topic. Personally, I was happy to have someone geek out with me.
But my friends, I am not alone. Actually I am rather tame compared to some of the other nut jobs out there. I read an article about the woman that was at the set of the movie, gave some random crew member her baby and told him to take the kid to the cast to take pictures. This nut wanted the lead actor to act like he was biting the kids head. Bizarre.
Nothing to do now but wait for info on the new movie coming out next year named after the second novel "New Moon". I would totally recommend reading this entire series. It is a great escape for those of us who have monotonous jobs and other various responsibilities who might need a little "me" time.
